WHO to Recommend Countermeasures for Negative Effects of Alcohol

February 4th, 2008 · No Comments

A spokeswoman for the World Health Organization (WHO) said Friday that the agency’s experts will recommend possible ways to counteract the negative effects and dangers associated with alcohol use, including heart and liver disease, road accidents, suicides, and sexually-transmitted diseases.  The WHO’s executive board strongly encouraged efforts to raise awareness about the risk of injury, violence, and illness from alcohol abuse, particularly among younger people.

The set of recommendations is expected to include guidelines on topics such as the marketing and distribution of alcoholic drinks, training for health workers, and public-awareness campaigns.
