In a measure proponents say will significantly reduce the number of drunk driving incidents, the Virginia House of Representatives approved a bill requiring the use of an ignition interlock after the first DUI conviction, rather than on the second offense that current law states. An ignition interlock is a device which will only allow a driver to start his car after blowing into it to prove a legal blood alcohol content (BAC). If the driver’s BAC is over the legal limit, the car will not start.
Opponents of the bill say that it is too “wide” of a “net” and will affect more than just chronic drunk drivers.
