According to a government report, the upper Midwest has the worst drunken driving rates in the country. The report relies on data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Wisconsin is the worst offender, followed by North Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota. The study estimates 25% of adult drivers in these areas report driving under the influence in the past year.
On the opposite end of the scale, Utah has the lowest incidence of drunken driving. Utah has the distinction of being the only state where fewer than 10% of adult drivers drove drunk in the past year. Also on the low end of the scale, West Virginia, Arkansas, Kentucky, and North Carolina hold relatively low driving under the influence rates. According to the study, the national estimate is about 15% of all adult drivers drive after drinking.
