California DUI Arrests Increase over Holiday Weekend

May 28th, 2008 · No Comments

Compared with last year, arrests for driving under the influence increased over the Memorial Day weekend in Monterey County, California.  This year, twenty-one DUI arrests were made.  In 2007, the total number of DUI charges was only ten.  Fortunately, no deaths related to driving under the influence were reported during either year.

Monterey County’s law enforcement plan for the Memorial Day weekend included in-city DUI patrols and sobriety checkpoints in Salinas.  Additionally, California Highway patrol helped in the effort to watch the freeways.   The plan was officially nicknamed ‘Avoid the 18,’ which references the eighteen participating law enforcement agencies.  ‘Avoid the 18′ will be in full force again during the Fourth of July and Labor Day celebrations.
